Wrapped in Plaid Scraps Mosaic Card

Many of my closest friends are avid stampers.  And, one of the things many of us have in common is that we don’t like to waste paper regardless of how small our scraps may be.  This is especially true for scraps of Designer Series Paper (DSP).  You can raise your hand in pride if you are part of this elite, resourceful group of crafters 🙂

Today, I’d like to share a beautiful mosaic card that you can make with your scraps.  You’ll see that I have used extra pieces of the gorgeous Wrapped in Plaid DSP to create this Christmas card.

As you know, I really like to share pictures when explaining how to make a particular card.  Below are the basic steps, with pictures, that you can use to put your own twist on this fun mosaic embossing technique.  Warning – It is addictive!

  • First, get a piece of double-sided sticky paper.  I got mine from Amazon.  Cut a sheet in half to get a piece measuring 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4.  Peel off the backing on the top side of the sheet to expose the adhesive.  Save the piece that you have peeled off.  You will need it in a later step.
  • Next, get your scrap pieces of Wrapped in Plaid DSP (or any paper that you have) and cut random shapes from the paper.  Put the cut pieces onto the adhesive sheet in a mosaic pattern.  Be sure to leave space between the pieces, and don’t put pieces at the top of the adhesive sheet.  Make sure your pieces are stuck flat on the adhesive sheet.
  • Grab the sheet that you peeled off in the first step, and cut off about 2″.  Attach this piece to the exposed adhesive.  You will use this as a “handle” to hold the mosaic as you emboss your design.

  • Now, the magic happens!  Liberally pour gold embossing powder (or whatever color you choose) over your mosaic pattern.  Be sure to get embossing powder over all exposed adhesive.  As best as you can, check to make sure there is no powder on the DSP pieces.  If there is, brush off any excess.  Heat set the mosaic piece with your heat gun.  Cut the piece to the size that you would like for your card.
  • Peel of the back of the mosaic piece to expose the adhesive.  Notice that the back of the pattern looks really fun as well.  Adhere the mosaic piece to your favorite card stock.  I used a piece of Shaded Spruce card stock cut to 5 1/2″ x 4″.
  • Finish your card by wrapping a piece of the beautiful Shaded Spruce Gold 3/8″ Striped Ribbon around the bottom of the mosaic piece.  Add a Christmas sentiment at the bottom right corner, as shown, using Night of Navy ink.  Adhere the card stock piece to the front of a card base from Thick Whisper White card stock.  And, embellish as you wish.

I hope you try this technique!  You’ll find that you can make cards for all occasions with your scraps, some double-sided adhesive sheets, and embossing powder.

Below are some of the products that I used to make the card above.  If you click on any picture, you’ll go to my on-line store.

Happy stamping!
