Butterfly Thinlits – Stretch Your Dies!

Yes – my motto is — One stamp set, three designs, endless possibilities.  I hope you’ll indulge me if I take a little liberty with the motto and switch it (this week) to be one die, three designs, endless possibilities!!

I love learning new ways to stretch my craft supplies. It’s great to find a card design that can easily be tailored to different occasions, different people’s tastes, and different color themes. This week, I’m going to focus on how you can stretch your dies to get multiple looks simply by changing a few simple things on your card.

Let’s start with the basic design shown below.  Isn’t this just a simple, elegant card?  It just makes me smile.  Throughout the week, I’ll add some additional cards with same basic design.  You’ll see that there are several ways to make this card your own.

This is the color palette that I used for this card.

I got my inspiration for this card from Mary Fish.  Check out the card that I CASEd that was posted by Mary – http://stampinpretty.com/2016/03/flying-high-with-bold-butterfly-dies.html. Mary is one of four artists whose blogs I visit every morning.  She is a very talented artist.  You should make her blog one in your routine as well.

Here are the directions for this card –

  1. Start with a white cardstock base cut at 8 ½” x 5 ½” and scored at 4 ¼” on the 8 ½” side.
  2. Cut a second piece of white cardstock to 5 ¼” x 4”.  On this piece of cardstock, stamp your choice of a sentiment on the bottom right corner using black ink.  In the example above, I used the “happy birthday” stamp from the Birthday Blossoms set (Annual catalog, pg 8).  I love the font and sentiments in the set.  The flower stamps are also very versatile.
  3. On the same piece of cardstock, die cut three detailed butterflies in the pattern shown above.  The butterflies are from the Bold Butterfly Framelits set (Annual catalog, pg 172).  The result will be that you’ll have three die cut detail butterflies and three butterfly holes in your cardstock.
  4. Emboss the cardstock piece using the Decorative Dots embossing folder (Annual catalog, pg 174).
  5. Adhere the embossed white cardstock to your card base as pictured above.
  6. Die cut three butterflies in your choice of colors.  Use the Butterflies Thinlits set to cut the butterflies.
  7. Adhere the die cut butterflies in the holes of the embossed white cardstock.
  8. Adhere the die cut detail butterfly pieces over the colored butterflies.  Only glue the bodies of the butterflies.  This will allow the wings to be curled slightly to give dimension.
  9. Finish your card by adding some bling to the butterflies.  A jewel from the Rhinestone Basic Jewels (Annual catalog, pg 160) has been added to each butterfly in the picture above.
