Painter’s Palette – Work of Art

If you’ve already purchased stamps, inks, paper, and accessories from the new Stampin’ Up! annual catalog, it’s probably a safe bet that the Painter’s Palette stamp set was on your list.  It is a great, versatile stamp set that I am going to feature this week.

The card below was made using a spotlight technique.  The parts of the flower that are inside the frame are colored.  The parts of the flower outside the frame remain black and white.  This technique can be used in many different ways.  Check out your craft stash to see the ways that you can design projects with spotlights.

Color palette for this card:

Directions for the cards are provided below:

  1. Cut a piece of white cardstock to 5 ½” x 8 ½” .  Score the 8 ½” side at 4 ¼” and fold into card base.

2. Cut the additional pieces that you’ll use for the layers on the front of the card:

  • 4” x 5 ¼” – This is the focal color for the card. The picture shows Peekaboo Peach.
  • 3 ½” x 4 ¾” – Black cardstock
  • 3 ¼ x 4 ½ – White cardstock

3. Stamp “Our Friendship is a work of art” in the bottom right corner of the 3 ¼” x 4 ½” white cardstock piece.  Use the color of ink that corresponds to the focal color.  The picture shows Peekaboo Peach.

4. Stamp the flower image from the You’ve Got This stamp set onto the same piece of white cardstock.  Use Memento black in for the stamping.  Reference the picture to place this image.

5. On a scrap piece of white cardstock, use the easel stamp from the Painter’s Palette stamp set, and stamp the easel image in Memento Black ink.  Cut out the frame from the stamped easel image.  It is going to become the frame used on this card for the spotlight technique.

6. You’re going to need to cut out the middle section of the frame to make sure you can see the flower image.  You can either use a square die to cut out the middle or scissors to cut it out.

7. The spotlight technique focuses color to one area of the card.  In this example, the color is focused to the inside of the frame.  Notice that the flower stem and petals that fall outside the frame are left without color.

8. Determine where you want the color to be on the flower and stem.  Lightly draw a pencil line to make sure you know where to color.  Use the new in-color Stampin’ markers to color the stem and flower.  Be sure to use the same new in-color for the flower petals as you have for the focal color of the card.  The picture again shows Peekabook Peach.

9. When you have finished coloring the flower, adhere the frame to the front of the card to align with your coloring.

10. Adhere the stamped white cardstock to the black layer.  Adhere the black layer to the focal color layer.

11.Use dimensionals to adhere the focal color layer to the white cardstock base.

12. A finishing touch in the picture is the addition of the push pin stamp to give the impression that the colored flower piece is tacked onto the card.  The push pin stamp is from the Painter’s Palette set.  It is stamped in Memento black ink, fussy cut, and adhered to the card.

The supplies used to make the card are shown below.  If you click on any picture, you’ll be taken to my on-line store.

Happy Stamping!
